The English School’s interpretation of Oakeshott’s theory of “Civil Association” has laid the foundation for modern states to construct rules for international society. In fact, it is the core issue for the English School to construct the normativeness of international society on the basis of the fact that modern states constitute basic units. Therefore, it is not coincidental that Oakeshott’s thought has been incorporated into the English School. Furthermore, the theory of “Civil Association” indicates that modern individuals pondering over relations among themselves bring both challenges and opportunities to relations among states, which points to the very theoretical difficulties faced by the English School. Therefore, the English School’s continuous response and interpretation of Oakeshott shed light on its own development path and theoretical future.
