From the perspective of the history of political theories, the center of gravity of Western studies of European Union (EU) politics gradually shifted from the United States to Western Europe after the 1990s. Meanwhile, the core topic also switched from explaining the EU integration, to analyzing the EU’s governance characteristics, and eventually to the phase of constructing the EU. In China, the preliminary stage of the study of EU politics is to generally track down Europe’s integration, and the second stage is to make the studies more social scientific by introducing Western EU political theories. The final stage is a pragmatically oriented comprehensive and in-depth research phase. The European academia’s own theoretical explication of the EU’s political integration has gradually matured and ultimately become the mainstream political theoretical framework about the EU through continuous communication with the American academia. In light of the European experience, China’s current approach of the studies of EU politics is promising, but at the current stage sufficient innovation in the domain of theories of EU politics still lacks.
