Area studies constitutes the bulk of international studies in India. The Indian government dominates both the establishment and development of the disciplines of area studies, while the freedom for schools and research institutions is very limited. Practical and empirical studies are emphasized. Although theoretical studies are relatively weak, theoretical awareness and reflections have started to grow. Area studies in India also covers many regions, and for every region there are different numbers of experts. However, comparative studies of different regions are still rare. Indian scholars are proactively seeking international influence, including academic influence, internationalizing employment for graduates, etc.
