Secessionism refers to the systematic thoughts and actions of a part of the population of a country that are aimed at separating the territory in which they live from that country, with the objection from the country they presently belong to, and at merging with another country or establishing a new one. Request for territory, exclusive identity, and secessionist organizations are the three core elements of secessionism. The emergence of secessionism often comes from a combination of closely linked political, economic and security factors. However, the cultural factor is the fundamental one.
