The U.S. Response to Hungarian Crisis of 1956

The outbreak of the Hungarian crisis in October 1956 tested the essence and effectiveness of the Eisenhower Administration's "Liberation Strategy" for Eastern Europe. From the beginnings of the crisis until the suppression by the Soviet Army, the U.S.'s actions did not reflect their highly promoted strategy of “liberation” and “rolling back.” Instead, the U.S. did the exact opposite - taking on a passive policy of non-intervention, caution, and disengagement. This kind of U.S response seems to be rather puzzling, but it in fact reflected the overall policy consideration and underlying logic of the U.S. Cold War strategy toward Eastern Europe.
