International roles are an important variable for analyzing states’ behavioral changes and foreign policy. The author investigates the domestic and international origins of international roles to explore role definition and transition. Combining international and domestic factors shows that definition and change come in four kinds. The author offers a dynamic model to explain these phenomena, providing a helpful research framework for analyzing change in foreign policy.
