The author uses editorial articles from The Eastern Miscellanies to understand a topic previously neglected by Chinese academics – the effect of the Russo-Japanese war on Chinese nationalism. Through understanding the feelings, consciousness, spirit and ideas of Chinese nationalism, and the confusion and complexity behind them, we can see that the Russo-Japanese war had profound and extensive impact on Chinese nationalism on a psychological, conscious and practical level. Even before revolutionaries like Sun Yat-sen, Chinese society had generally accepted nationalism. The Russo-Japanese war played a critical role in bringing about this shift.
