Reflections on Democratism

Published:2018-06-14 Published:2018-06-14   Author:Xu Zhenzhou   [Small] [Middle] [Big] [More]

When we reflect on democracy, what needs to be clarified is whether democracy as an institution has less than satisfactory efficacy or its principle is problematic. Democracy is an institution with general elections as its core characteristic and a spirit with “all men are created equal” as its principle, i.e., democratism. Institution may bear further improvement, but democratism deserves reiteration. There are differences between individuals in terms of intelligence and ability, but everybody is equal in face of life, dignity, pain, joy, and, especially, interests. The belief in success is a new variant of elitism under new circumstances and it does not constitute a real challenge to democratism either in practice or in theory.
