Globalization has had an important impact upon the emergence and development of contemporary secessionism. Not only does it undermine the capacity of nation-states in terms of national identity, regime performance, cultural integration, and sovereignty, but it also increases the possibility and feasibility of secessionism and strengthens to a large extent the mobilizational capability and internationalization of secessionist forces. It is thus imperative to study how to deal with the shocks of globalization in the struggle against secessionism.
